Welcome to Larry Loebell's home page, updated for Spring and Summer of 2008. This site serves as a combination vita, press kit, and sampler for my playwriting, dramaturgy, teaching, and other work. Here are some highlights:

The big news is the opening -- on May 22, 2008 -- of my newest play HOUSE, DIVIDED at InterAct Theater Company in Philadelphia. Please click the link above for more information and tickets. The cast is Paul Meshejian, David Howey, David Raphaeli, Robert DaPonte, Noah Herman, and Dan Hodge, and will be directed by Seth Rozin.

Also this spring there have been several public readings of HOUSE, DIVIDED, the first on March 17th at at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.

On March 31, HOUSE, DIVIDED was read at New Repertory Theater in Watertown, MA, as part of a festival called THEIR VOICES WILL BE HEARD: Artist Responses to the Israeli-Palestinian Situation.

In addition to HOUSE, DIVIDED my short play about Constitutional issues called LIVING NEWS reopened at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on March 10. This is the 4th version of this play, re-written and updated seasonally, which is in the style of the living newspaper dramas of the 1930's. LIVING NEWS plays three or four times a day and runs roughly a half hour. LIVING NEWS runs this spring through June 13. Please contact the Constitution Center for information or visit them on line here: http://www.constitutioncenter.org

While you are at the Constitution Center, please visit Signers Hall. In this room, statues of the 39 signers of the Constitution and 3 dissenters from signing are depicted in full-sized bronze statuary as the last of the them has affixed his name to the document. An iPod tour of this room features short dramatic monologues I wrote in the voices of each of the men, spoken by each one as if you had encountered come upon moments after the document was signed on that eventful day. The hall is quite moving to experience, with or without the iPod tour.

My plays are listed at the left. Descriptions can be found by following the links. Five of my plays can be purchased through Playscripts.com including my monologue BUT WHO'S COUNTING in a new publication called "Actor's Choice: Monologues for Women." My play, La Tempestad, was published last year in a great anthology called Playing With Canons: Explosive New Works from Great Literature by America's Indie Playwrights, which can be purchased here. In addition, several monologues from La Tempestad will be published shortly in Smith and Krause and Applause monologue books.

Over the last 20 years I have also worked as a film and television writer, director, and producer. Samples and descriptions of this work can be found by following the Film and Television link. I have also written for several non-profit organizations and museums.

Since 2005 I have been working as a free-lance dramaturg, including for the PlayPenn play development conference (2005 through 2007), for New Paradise Laboratories (2005) and at Seven Devils Playwrights Conference (2007). I continue to maintain strong ties to InterAct Theatre Company where I worked as the staff literary manager and dramaturg from 1998 to 2005.

I have been teaching at area colleges and universities since 1977. I have taught English composition and Literature, playwriting, dramaturgy, film and television production, narrative film and documentary film history, and screenwriting. Since 1998 I have been an adjunct professor at the University of the Arts in the Writing for Film and Television Department, teaching the history of narrative cinema. I am also currently on the adjunct faculty at Arcadia University teaching playwriting and dramaturgy.
