Synopsis:

House, Divided is a play in progress about two brothers, one living in the United States and one living in Israel, and their sons. The Israeli brother lives on the West Bank and believes Israel, right or wrong. His brother is a peace activist working for Amnesty International, wary of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians. Dormant conflict dating back to the time of the War in Vietnam erupts between them when the son of the Israeli brother deserts the IDF and flees to his uncle's house in the states.

Research and writing of House, Divided has been supported by a generous new play commission from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture and on-going support from InterAct Theatre Company.

House, Divided will have its world premiere production at InterAct Theater Company in the spring of 2008.

From House, Divided:

DOUGLAS

Once a year, for all those years, I got letters from Dad trying to convince me that you were a decent guy and that I had taken what you said to me all wrong. I simply didn't understand your choices, that being religious was all or nothing, and you couldn’t pick and choose what to believe. His letters made me feel guilty, until the next time I saw you and I remembered what your judgment of me was. It took me a long time to figure it out, but these days I think that all of the stuff they say about the importance of families is bullshit. I found plenty of brothers when I needed them, Lou, and plenty of father figures. It's pretty easy to break the biological bonds. It takes a lot less than you think.
