GIRL SCIENCE SAMPLE SCENE: YOUNG JOHANNA Is someone there? WILL Johanna? YOUNG JOHANNA Who is that? WILL (Stepping out into view:) Johanna? It's me. Will Dayton. YOUNG JOHANNA Hello, Will Dayton. What are you doing here? WILL I was wondering...if I'm not disturbing you too much...if you might...if you want to...that is if I asked you... YOUNG JOHANNA What? Just say it! I won't bite. WILL I was wondering if you might want to go ice skating with me. YOUNG JOHANNA Ice skating? WILL Yea. I have my skates and... YOUNG JOHANNA Are you crazy or just colorblind? WILL What? YOUNG JOHANNA Can't you see the flags? WILL The flags? YOUNG JOHANNA The flags! WILL Oh, yea. I see them. So what? WILL comes up right next to her. He picks up some snow that has blown onto the Gazebo floor and throws it into the air so it sprinkles down on YOUNG JOHANNA. YOUNG JOHANNA Hey! WILL Oh. Sorry. YOUNG JOHANNA Why'd you do that? WILL I don't know. No reason. So do you want to? YOUNG JOHANNA No. I mean yes. But I can't. We can't. WILL I can. Watch this. YOUNG JOHANNA Will. Don't. Will! But he doesn't pay any attention. He begins by taking the stuttering steps a skater takes to get started, and then he glides off, in a circle near to the gazebo. He's more running on the ice than skating. YOUNG JOHANNA keeps calling and trying to get him to come in off the river. YOUNG JOHANNA Will! WILL She is growing nervous, but he soon returns. Very full of himself. YOUNG JOHANNA What were you trying to do out there? WILL What was I trying to do? YOUNG JOHANNA Yes. WILL I wasn't trying to do anything. YOUNG JOHANNA Well just don't, okay? WILL Don't what? YOUNG JOHANNA I mean it. WILL Okay. YOUNG JOHANNA Having you here is nice. WILL It is? YOUNG JOHANNA Sure. So don't spoil it. WILL I won't spoil anything. YOUNG JOHANNA Promise. WILL I promise. WILL grabs her and kisses her on the lips. We can see the ambivalence in her body language, resisting and simultaneously interested. After a moment he releases her. YOUNG JOHANNA Hey. WILL Hey what? YOUNG JOHANNA What was that? WILL What was what? YOUNG JOHANNA That! What you just did. WILL What did I do? YOUNG JOHANNA You promised. WILL You were talking about that? YOUNG JOHANNA When? WILL When you were telling me what I wasn't supposed to do? YOUNG JOHANNA No I was not. WILL So then that was okay. YOUNG JOHANNA No. WILL I thought it was.
