Edward and Ellie is a single-set, three character play. Synopsis: Edward and Ellie, a work-weary couple, arrive at their vacation destination, Lake Toytonka, only to find their accomodations burning, the landlord overbearing, and the picturesque lake they dreamed of swimming in and sailing on, drained. And that's only the beginning. The vacation property to which they have staked a two week claim is up for sale-- after having been won just a year before in a poetry contest. Now someone is going to make a killing in the vacation real estate market. Their landlord and host, Vic Kimmel, wants to persuade Edward and Ellie that that killing can be made by them. But they learn quickly that Vic Kimmel is the kind of man who would cheat to win a contest, lie to enter a conversation, and misrepresent to get unsuspecting vacationers to stay where there are no watersports. But Edward and Ellie are drawn into his pitch anyway. And why not? This is America. Everyone can be a millionare. And besides, they're on vacation, and there's nothing else to do... Characters: Ellie -- The same age as her husband, Edward. Setting: The front porch and lawn in front of a summer cabin in the Adirondack mountains. Time: Last summer. Playing time: Approximately 30 minutes. History: Edward and Ellie Supine was completed in 1996, and is a companion piece to Angie and Arnie Sanguine. In 1999, Edward and Ellie Supine was a finalist in the Drury College Short Play Competition. Sample Scene: EDWARD AND ELLIE SUPINE ELLIE My point is, last year we never got a real vacation because of that disaster with your parents. EDWARD For the hundredth, thousandth, millionth time, I did not know he was leaving her. ELLIE And for the hundredth, thousandth, millionth time, you should have. EDWARD After 38 years, I thought it was working. ELLIE He was shrewd, I'll give him that. He got us there to hold her hand. EDWARD You jumped at the chance to go down there, even though it violated the summer north, winter south rule. ELLIE He sent us tickets. Their condo is on the beach. Who turns down a free vacation? EDWARD That is a cardinal rule. As immutable as never mix, never worry, as never draw to an inside straight. You break that rule, woe betide. ELLIE Which is why this year we're here, which is why this year I'm getting a tan, and which is why I want to have absolutely nothing to do. That's the cardinal rule here. OK? EDWARD Absolutely. ELLIE No schedule. EDWARD No schedule. ELLIE No agenda. EDWARD No agenda. (Beat:) So I'll get us moved in and unpacked. (Loading up
to carry things inside:) Where's everything go? What's the plan?
